The main material difference is the core: wood-plastic composite decking combines wood fibers with polymers, while PVC decking uses polyvinyl chloride without wood fibers. Compare samples in the setting
View samples outdoors against your siding, trim and proposed railing. Look at grain, sheen, edge details and the way the color reads in shade and sun. A small sample does not reproduce every condition on a finished deck, but it can reveal a color mismatch before ordering. Ask to see the fascia and stair treatment as well as the main deck board.
Include the installation requirements
Ask your builder to review the current instructions for framing support, fasteners, gapping and any special layout conditions. A diagonal pattern, stairs or a border can require different detailing. The right comparison includes all compatible components and the work needed for the selected design, not just the advertised board cost.
Understand care and warranty conditions
Lower maintenance does not mean no cleaning. Ask for the care instructions for the exact product and keep them with your project documents.
