Keep stairs from taking over the yard
On a compact property, the stair run and landing can occupy a significant part of the available space. Compare routes that preserve room for seating and access. Include door swings, gates and the path used to move equipment or bins through the yard. A measured layout is more useful than choosing deck size in isolation.
Prepare a consistent exterior proposal
Where association review applies, assemble a clear footprint, elevations and material palette using the current submission requirements. Make sure the proposed deck, stairs and any screening are represented consistently. A later change to the railing or footprint should be checked against the approvals needed for the project.
Choose finishes as a set
Look at decking, fascia, railing and stair details together against the home's exterior. Review samples in daylight and compare the expected care of each system. If the goal is a future patio below or a later enclosure, raise that early so the first scope can be evaluated with the longer-term plan in mind.
