Read the grade before drawing the deck
Where a yard slopes away from the home, stairs and landings deserve as much attention as the deck itself. Trace a comfortable route between the door, a potential patio and the open yard. A later porch may change the structural requirements; a later kitchen may change the best patio location. Compare wood, composite and PVC decking in terms of appearance, product-specific care and the complete installed assembly. For adjoining patios, look at color and texture alongside the house masonry.
