There is no single useful price without a scope
A board price or a national cost-per-square-foot figure is not a complete deck budget. A useful estimate needs the footprint, elevation, stair arrangement, railing, materials and existing conditions. Compare two decks of the same size

Their areas match, but the support, stairs, access and future structural requirements may differ substantially. This is why square footage alone can hide the decisions that matter.
Separate the major parts of the budget
Ask the proposal to identify preparation and demolition, foundations and framing, decking and fascia, stairs and railings, and any electrical or other trade work. Discuss design, permit responsibilities and site restoration as part of the scope. Confirm whether the price includes disposal and whether existing work is being retained. A low total can simply reflect missing work.
Make selections comparable
Specify a decking product or a clearly defined allowance. Then do the same for railing, lighting and finish details. Compare complete systems rather than the price of a single board. Send a brief that supports a real estimate
Include your address, photos, approximate footprint, door height above the yard, preferred materials and intended use. Mention an existing deck to remove and any future porch or kitchen.
